Tim Jennings and Leanne Ponder, two of New England's finest interpreters of the traditional oral tale, have created a very funny and involving program of storytelling and music. Their timeless theme of goodness vs. greed might be especially appropriate for the holiday season, while the show's riotous good humor, ageless appeal, and exuberant audience involvement make it a show that adults, teens, and children can all enjoy together.

The couple performs their tales together, voices intertwining and overlapping in a narrative counterpoint, a compelling alloy of technique and soul. Harp and concertina weave music into the tale-spinning. Humor, suspense, pathos and exhilaration all come into play, with elements of old music hall and vaudeville.

Earlier this year, Jennings and Ponder were awarded a creation grant by the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts to assist in the creation of a new program of relatively little-known (but classic!) traditional tales on a theme of goodness and greed. They've performed elements of the program during the summer and fall in a number of locations, including SolarFest, Green Mountain College, MoonDance festival in Windsor, St. Johnsbury's Fuller Hall, and the two Lake Champlain Waterfront festivals in Burlington and Crown Point.

As part of the grant, they recorded a live performance for release as a CD this fall. The CD is now ready. To support its release the couple is scheduling a special series of performances and appearances November through January, all around Vermont. Their appearance at Sandglass is the series debut.

Tim and Leanne have performed in major venues across North America, including appearances at the National Storytelling Festival and International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough TN, Hudson Clearwater Revival Festival, and the Toronto Storytelling Festival, Their favorite audiences continue to be the ones that shaped them over the last thirty years of professional performance, in the theaters, school, colleges, festivals and libraries around New England and especially Vermont.

Sandglass Theater's storyteller series will conclude on Dec. 6 at 4 p.m., with local favorite Larry Bramble's retelling of Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory."
