A KIND OF ALASKA
by Harold Pinter

seeking:

DEBORAH:
Mid 40s. A hospital patient who has suffered from sleeping sickness since she was sixteen years old. Has been asleep for twenty-nine years; hence, she does not know her age. Unable to think or behave as a grown woman. CAST

HORNBY:
Early 60s. The physician who has cared for Deborah for twenty-nine years and now wakes her. He is married to Pauline and is therefore Deborah’s brother-in-law. Although he seems, at first, to be a dispassionate physician who limits his talk to simple statements and queries, his personal involvement in Deborah’s case is revealed as the play progresses. He has become obsessed with her.

PAULINE:
Early 40s. Deborah’s younger sister. Married to Hornby. She is the only member of Deborah’s family who is present onstage. Pauline tentatively gives facts to her sister, but she is deliberately vague. Describes herself as a “widow,” leaving it to Hornby to reveal their marriage and the cause of its failure: his devotion to the unconscious Deborah.

seeking:

SALTER:
Early 60s A middle-class man, was married and had one son. His wife killed herself by throwing herself under a tube train. A few years later he had his son Bernard cloned.

BERNARD (ALL THREE CHARACTERS PLAYED BY THE SAME ACTOR)

* BERNARD (B1): 40 years old. First son of Salter. His mother committed suicide when he was two years old. A bitter man who finds his father after being given up. He was abused and neglected as a child by Salter and naturally is angry, but still has a bond with Salter because he is his father.

* BERNARD (B2): Salter’s son. 35 years old. First clone of his first son, made to replace original son. From conception he has been told lies, from how is mother died to the fact that he is a clone. He is angry, confused and lost. His world has been shattered and he is scared; scared of not having a sense of self anymore, scared of his lack of uniqueness, and scared of Bernard

* MICHAEL BLACK: Salter’s son. 35 years old. Another clone of Salter’s first son. He is married with three children, a boy, a girl, and a small child ages twelve, eight, and eighteen months, and is a mathematics teacher. He is a “mild-mannered teacher, a happy family man, who takes the news of his unusual genesis with extraordinary equilibrium.
