BREAKDOWN

EMPIRE THE MUSICAL

As we start rehearsal very soon, we are hoping to make many hires from these auditions! So please take a good look at the vocal range and dance requirements for each character and identify a role that you are suited for.

SYNOPSIS: EMPIRE is an epic musical about the dreamers and doers who changed the world forever when they built the Empire State Building. Fresh & original, Empire has uplifting melodies, energizing dance numbers, daring spectacle, and a compelling story that celebrates the purpose driven life of those with the guts to choose hope, every day. It takes place in both 1976 and in the 1930’s.

SEEKING:

Emily O’Dowd/Lois: 20s-30s, Irish immigrant, Broadway belt/soprano, strong dancer, (soprano - C4- E5) Emily is Ethan’s wife and a new mother. She questions if the move to the United States was the right one. Lois is a secretary under Wally. Very capable and committed to the task.

Goodie/Chanteuse: 20s-50s, any ethnicity, traditional Broadway vocals/strong dancer, (alto/belt G3- D5) Goodie is Wally’s gung-ho, wise-cracking or ditzy, fun, capable, energetic sidekick. She is often underestimated but shouldn’t be. The Chanteuse is the singer in a Speakeasy. Sultry, dry and a whole lot of fun.

Jesse Bland: 30s-40s, Mohawk, Kahnawake/French Canadian, traditional Broadway vocals/strong dancer, (bari/tenor – G3 - Ab5, strong mix/belt to Ab5) A Mohawk Skywalker/Ironworker. He’s strong, reliable, capable, and kind. He looks out for his cousin Rudy and helps her keep her secret.

Joe Pakulski/Mayor Jimmy Walker: 20s-30s, Polish immigrant, traditional Broadway vocals/strong dancer, (tenor – to G) Pakulski is a ‘Bucker up’ on a Rivet Gang, helping to build the Empire State Building. He’s a romantic and a poet. Mayor Jimmy Walker, based on an historical figure, is the gorgeous, playboy, wonderfully corrupt Mayor of NYC (1926-1932.) He was groomed for office by both Raskob and Smith and then callously betrayed them as his clout grew.

Billy Betts: 18+ to play 16, white, traditional Broadway vocals/strong dancer, (young tenor – to G) Betts, who the men call “Bettsy,” is from Oklahoma, but he found his way to NYC to fulfill his dream of working with the Mohawks in the sky. He’s naïve, curious, absorbs it all, and aspires to even more. (Will double as other characters.)

Paola De Caprio: 20s-30s, Italian immigrant, traditional Broadway vocals/strong dancer, (baritone/tenor) Paola is a ‘Catcher’ on a Rivet Gang, helping to build the Empire State Building. He believes in his work and his family. He bonds with friends on jobs and is someone everyone wants to be around, but he has a low tolerance for things he doesn’t understand. (Will double as other characters.)

Mateo Menzo: 20s-40s, Italian-American, traditional Broadway vocals/strong dancer, (baritone) Mateo is a ‘Heater’ on a Rivet Gang, helping to build the Empire State Building. No-nonsense, proud, muscular and quite handsome. (Will double as other characters.)

Mohawk Elder Woman: 60-70, Mohawk, Kahnawake/French Canadian, traditional Mohawk vocals as well as Broadway vocals, good mover. She exists in the 1976 timeline. A grandmother who loves her family more than anything.

Swing 1: Female, late 30s-early 40s, any ethnicity, wide vocal range, strong dancer.

Swing 2: Male, 30s, any ethnicity, wide vocal range, strong dancer.
