Breakdown

FOR ALL CHARACTERS: Must have experience doing both Shakespearean tragedy and Noel Coward; i.e., language, emotional fluency, and wit are essential. The production will be highly physical, including stage combat. Actors must not be afraid of getting wet or muddy. Performers of all ethnic and racial background are encouraged to attend.

FOR FEMALE CHARACTERS: Fit and strong, not willowy. Tall a plus.

FOR MALE CHARACTERS: Fit and strong, good calves.

PENTHESILEA
(F, 40s) Queen of the Amazons and all that that implies. Lack of impulse control. Had a privileged, sheltered upbringing; thus unexpectedly innocent.

PROTHOË
(F, 30-40) An Amazonian warrior. Deeply principled; loyal to and protective of her queen. Lowest on the Amazonian totem pole, but always the smartest in the room.

ASTERA
(F, 40-45) An Amazonian general. Ambitious, slippery; even guileful. Not without acumen.

HIGH PRIESTESS
(F, 40-60) Pragmatic. Fiercely traditionalist, because she has lived through real oppression.

ACHILLES
(M, 40s) A Greek warrior. Tempestuous and impetuous. Aware of his own mythic status. His charm is oily but sincerely charming.

ODYSSEUS
(M, 45-50) Envoy of Agamemnon. World-weary, wry. Clear-sighted, the smartest, most rational man in any room.

DIOMEDES
(M, 30-40) A Greek warrior. Youthful, lusty.

ANTILOCHUS
(M, 45-50) A Greek warrior. Meat-and-potatoes. Old-school. Good work ethic.

AGAMEMNON
(M, 35-50) King of the Greeks. A born leader. Commands respect. Sensible, smart. Weary of his current situation.
