Breakdown

THE GOUNDLING
by Marc Palmieri

Bob Malone:
Male, late 30s- 40s. A small business owner living on eastern Long Island. Blue collar, sizely, tough but humble and unassuming. He has never seen a play in his life before stumbling upon an outdoor Shakespeare production the previous summer. He is married to Karen for 8 years, and they fight every day.

Karen Malone:
Female, late 30s. Tough but damaged, sharp but reserved, caustic and unsentimental. Bob’s wife. She seems in a bad mood most of the time. She remembers herself as being “funny” in the past, before her marriage.

Victoria Evans:
Female, 30. A pretty, classically trained actress living in New York City. Has never made it to Broadway, television, or the movies. She is committed, however, to her art, generous with people and open-minded. She recently worked on Love’s Labour’s Lost and had a regrettable “showmance” with the director.

Pete:
20s. A sensitive, parochial former athlete type living on Long Island. He is a thoughtful, gentle, cooperative and longing young man. He was convicted of selling a small amount of pot almost a year prior and is permanently sad. Pete occasionally writes music. NOT a stoner but well spoken, even if he has never experienced life beyond Suffolk County. Dead pan comic skills a must.

Frank
Male, 70s. Karen’s father. Army veteran. Retiree. Hard of hearing. Kind.
