Breakdown

Politics is dirty--but politicians are dirtier. That truth is laid bare in TAIL! SPIN!, a hysterical, verbatim mash-up of the documented interviews, secret e-mails, raunchy texts and Twitter gaffes that brought down politicians Anthony Weiner, Larry Craig, Mark Foley and Mark Sanford. Using only the actual words of the disgraced politicians, their paramours, and the media they tried to spin, TAIL! SPIN! weaves an intricate, overlapping narrative of the power of sex--and the sex lives of the powerful. Tail! Spin! is created by NPR contributor Mario Correa and directed by Tony-nominee Dan Kenechtges (Lysistrata Jones).

SEEKING:

PLEASE NOTE: Each actor in this show plays one of the politicians and is the lead in the section of the piece that follows their individual scandal, but they all also play multiple supporting roles in the other sections including reporters, other politicians, lawyers, and participants. Actors must be comfortable playing multiple roles and all actors and MUST HAVE STRONG COMIC CHOPS.

ACTOR 1/SENATOR LARRY CRAIG and others [CAST]: MALE, 40s-50s but can read older. Tall, balding, slightly gawky, with a modulated speaking voice reminiscent of a 1950s sitcom. Craig reminds us of someone from a bygone era — with mannerisms, a speaking voice, and a sense of morality more at home 75 years ago than today. He would’ve been right at home in a Leave It to Beaver episode, where everything seems perfect and right on the surface, especially when it isn’t. Looks older than he is (he was in his late 50s at the time of the scandal, but would have passed for a good 10 years older).

ACTOR 2/REPRESENTATIVE MARK FOLEY and others: MALE, late 30s-late 40s, but must be able to pull off acting younger for the role of LUKE RUSSERT in another section. Backslapping, gregarious, ‘how ya doin’!’ type — reminiscent of a cheesy Florida realtor. Foley was in his late 40s at the time of the scandal and is the kind of guy who hated getting older — he whitened his teeth, put gel in his hair, hung around kids 25 years younger. Had the wink/point of a typical politician down and was always dangerously close to becoming a caricature of himself.

ACTOR 3/REPRESENTATIVE ANTHONY WEINER and others: MALE, late 30s-late 40s. Youthful and fit for a politician. Whip-smart, acerbic, nasal voice. Must also be able to act high school age convincingly as PAGE in Foley scandal. This does not mean actor must look young, but he must be able to perform youth and innocence in a grounded and real way.

ACTOR 4/GOVENOR MARK SANFORD and others: MALE, late-40s-late 50s. Tall, attractive, with a soft southern lilt, a romantic, lost-in-the-clouds type. Very conservative, but not hard-edged; by all appearances, a genuinely principled politician, someone we trust so much a scandal is all the more shocking. A guy who is very much in touch with his feelings--maybe too much so--and therefore weighed down by and at the mercy of them.

ACTOR 5 [CAST]: FEMALE, 30s-late 40s. plays all of the wives, mistresses and beards of the politicians covered in Tail! Spin!, as well as the role of their inquisitor —Barbara Walters. Must be able to seamlessly move between young, old, proper, lewd, clueless and insightful: from a staid and clueless middle aged wife (Suzanne Craig) to Anthony Weiner’s various, younger sexting partners (college student Gennette Cordova, stripper Ginger Lee, blackjack dealer Lisa Weiss) to Congressman Mark Foley’s German beauty pageant winner beard, Petra Levin, and ultimately, to the upstanding, independent-minded Jenny Sanford — right alongside the iconic Barbara Walters.

MALE UNDERSTUDY: MALE, late 30s-50 to understudy ACTOR 1, 2, 3, and 4.

FEMALE UNDERSTUDY: FEMALE, 30s-late 40s to understudy ACTOR 5.
