Breakdown

In the 2013 Richard Rodgers Award winning musical, THE KID WHO WOULD BE POPE, Billy, the new kid at Our Lady Of Perpetual Motion, has a lot to learn about parochial school. When he meets his drama teacher Sister Katherine, a beguiling novice who jogs and sings like Julie Andrews, he falls hopelessly in love, resolving to become Pope and change the rules of the church so that they can one day marry.

ADULT PERFORMERS 18+ for roles that are children and roles that are adults

CHILDREN: Seeking Adults 18+ for:

BILLY McPHERSON:
Adult male actor 18+ To play 11 years old/5th grader. Lead. Billy is a sensitive, imaginative boy with a strong will. There is a sense of him having lost his grounding when his family moved from Florida to Boston. Fast and funny, but also with an inner need and emotional depth driving him in his quest. He is open hearted, with a vulnerable
quality. TENOR with a light youthful quality.

ALISON McNALLY (ALI):
Adult female actor to play 11 years old/5th grader. Lead. A very smart, pretty girl who is more mature than her classmates. She was the new kid last year, so she knows what it is like to be an outsider. She is adventurous, slightly bossy, with a lot of spark and comic chops. MEZZO SOPRANO with a light youthful quality.

JOHNNY McJOHNSON:
Adult male actor 18+ to play 11 years old/5th grader. Billy’s classmate and fraternal twin brother of Joey McJohnson. He is the ringleader of the mischievous McJohnson twins. A master of ridicule and practical jokes. Comic chops a must. TENOR.

JOEY McJOHNSON:
Adult male actor 18+ to play 11 years old/5th grader. Billy’s classmate and fraternal twin brother of Jimmy McJohnson. The “younger” twin. Mischievous. Also good at ridicule and practical jokes. Takes his lead from his brother. Comic chops a must. TENOR.

MARY-LOUISE McPAULSON/BILLY’S MOM:
Adult male actor 18+ to play both a 5th grader and Billy’s Mom. Looking for an ageless actress who can play both a classmate and Billy’s mom. MARY-LOUISE is smart with a slightly artistic bent. BILLY’S MOM is early 30’s, newly divorced. She uprooted Billy to her home of Boston after a failed marriage in Florida. Comic chops. SOPRANO.

KENNY McBRIDE/TEVYE/ATTILLA THE HUN/BALL AND CHAIN:
Adult male actor 18+ to play 11 years old/5th grader. Perhaps a little slower than the rest, but loveable and dependable. He is on the heavier side. He is always the last kid picked on a team. He will grow up to sell life insurance. Comedic chops a must. BARITONE.

ADULT CHARACTERS

SISTER KATHERINE:
FEMALE, early-mid 20s. A luminous nun and the drama teacher at the school. She has an inner emotional vitality that conveys warmth, humanity and harmony. She's physically attractive, but it is her inner emotional quality; an open, unguarded quality that is most striking. Wonderfully sweet. Comedic without playing comedy. Think Maria in SOUND OF MUSIC. Were you to walk into a roomful of strangers, Sr. Katherine would be the easiest to approach and the most welcoming. SOPRANO.

SISTER RUDY/ANGEL 1/DEVIL [CAST]:
Role CAST. (actors may be considered for possible replacements if needed)
MALE to play female, 40s-50s. Billy's harsh, domineering classroom teacher. Old school when it comes to discipline: children are wild animals to be tamed through constant humiliation. Capable of flights of fancy and high-reverie if discussing religion, food, Italy. She understands the notion of service, not so much love. Her hard shell is not immune to the attention of her religious peers. Must be able to play different characters and have great comic chops. CHARACTER BARITONE.

FATHER BURNS/THE POPE:
MALE, 40s-50s. Seeking an actor who is great with accents, creative with characters, and has strong comedy skills. FATHER BURNS is a parish priest with an Irish accent. THE POPE is, well, THE POPE—an Italian one with a very heavy Italian accent. Must be able to convey a sense of wisdom and dry humor. Also plays additional characters. CHARACTER BARITONE.

SISTER DEL MONICO/CARDINAL LOUIS/MARY McDOYLE/BOXING NUN:
FEMALE, Late 30s-50s, to play a wide range of characters from 5th grader to middle-aged nun. Seeking an actress who is great with accents, creative with characters, and has strong comedy skills. SISTER DEL MONICO is a mysteriously mute nun at the convent/school. CARDINAL LOUIS is the Pope’s right-hand man in Vatican City and a seducer of visiting nuns. Russian accent. MARY McDOYLE is a wise-cracking 5th grade classmate of Billy’s. ALTO (BELT).
