BOY WILLIE
Male, African American, Late 20s-early 30s. He has an infectious grin and a boyishness that is apt for his name. He is brash and impulsive, talkative and somewhat crude in speech and manner. Lives in Mississippi. Self-confident, outgoing, entrepreneurial, clever, wily, friendly but determined.

LYMON
Male, African American, Late 20s-early 30s. BOY WILLIE's partner, he talks little, and then with a straightforwardness that is often disarming. Lives in Mississippi. Thinks of himself as a ladies man by in fact is not very successful at it. Content to let Boy Willie take the lead, but ready to step up on his own

BERNIECE
Female, African American, 30-35. Mother to an eleven-year-old daughter. Strong and reserved. She is still in mourning for her husband after three years. Born and raised in Mississippi but now lives in Pittsburgh. Level-headed, likes things to be calm, unruffled, organized, and tidy. Suspicious of change. Loyal to family and memories.

AVERY
Male, African American, Late 30s-early 40s. Honest and ambitious, he has taken to the city like a fish to water, finding in it opportunities for growth and advancement that did not exist for him in the rural South. Born and raised in Mississippi now lives in Pittsburgh. A preacher by choice, works as an elevator operator. Wants to settle down and marry Berniece

GRACE
Female, African American, Mid-late 20s. Enjoys the nightlife. She is perceptive and doesn't like to cause trouble, or be around trouble. Pretty and lively.
