Breakdown

Synopsis:
THE UNDERCLASSMAN is an original musical inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s college years and his debut novel This Side of Paradise. Set in 1915, the brilliantly talented young writer F. Scott Fitzgerald is swept into the hierarchy of Ivy League society and the antics of the Princeton Triangle Club, in pursuit of the beautiful and elusive debutante Ginevra King.

SEEKING:

Strong actor-singers with good movement ability for the following roles:

F. SCOTT FITZGERALD (20s, tenor). A sophomore at Princeton University. Brilliant, ambitious, in search of the path to greatness that he will one day achieve. A self-described “romantic egotist,” he is clever and charming, and therefore considers himself something of a ladies’ man. He is also deeply insecure, treated as an outsider by many of his classmates because of his humble middle-class background.

EDMUND WILSON (20’s, baritone). A junior at Princeton. Scott’s friend (nicknamed “Bunny”). Serious-minded, cerebral. He is in the Triangle Club with Scott, and is also the editor of the campus literary magazine. An editor by temperament, he can be prickly and critical—especially on the subject of romance. He recognizes Scott’s genius, but also believes that Scott is lazy and undisciplined as a writer, and as a student.

JOHN PEALE BISHOP (20’s, baritenor). A sophomore at Princeton. Scott’s best friend. An aspiring poet. Shy, awkward. He is much less socially adept than Scott, but the two share a deep love of writing. Like Edmund, he wants to see his friend use his talents for something more serious than writing Triangle Club lyrics and charming young women.

GINEVRA KING (20’s, soprano). From a very wealthy family, one of the “top four debutantes” of her generation. She is smart, sophisticated, and articulate—more than a match for Scott when it comes to romantic game-playing. She rebels against her background, and has cultivated her reputation as a “speed”—a bad girl. But underneath, she is a more vulnerable and conventional soul than she would like to admit.

MARIE HERSEY (20’s, mezzo). Scott’s high school sweetheart from St. Paul, nicknamed “Bug.” She is also Ginevra’s best friend and roommate at the Westover School for Girls. She is down-to-earth, with a wry sense of humor. Despite her initial anger when Scott pursues her friend, Marie is still very fond of Scott and is concerned that he will ultimately get hurt in what she views as an impossible romance with Ginevra. Actor must have spot-on comic timing.

TRIP EVERETT (20’s, baritenor). A Princeton upperclassman in the Triangle Club. Big Man On Campus. Scott’s idol. Effortlessly cool.

A. HAMILTON SAMUELS (20’s, tenor). A Princeton upperclassman – the Triangle Club President. Goofily charismatic.

WILTON DARBY (20’s, baritone.) A Princeton upperclassman – one of Trip’s sidekicks. Haughty, sarcastic. Strong dance ability a plus.

ELLIS GRIFFIN (20’s, baritenor.) A Princeton upperclassman – one of Trip’s sidekicks. Snide, snarky. Strong dance ability a plus.

FREDDY FORGAN (20’s, baritone.) A Princeton underclassman. The Triangle Club’s resident composer. Passionately, comedically, intense about music. Scared of girls.

CLIVE BAGBY (20’s, tenor.) A Princeton underclassman in the Triangle Club. Ambitious, opportunistic. Takes over for Scott when he is kicked out of the show.

TYLER PIERCE (20’s, baritenor.) A senior at Yale. Scott’s rival for the affections of Ginevra. He comes from a wealthy family and has elitist attitudes to match. May also double in other small roles.

MALE ENSEMBLE (20’s, various voice parts)
Two additional male singer-actors with strong dance ability are needed to play Princeton students and Triangle Club performers.

FEMALE ENSEMBLE (20’s, various voice parts)
Four young women to play Westover girls, debutantes at various dances, lower class “Jersey girls” at the seaside, rich ladies in Lake Forest, and Blue Slipperettes in a fantasy sequence. Strong dance ability a plus.
