SYNOPSIS: This is a true story. It’s the 90s in rural Falcon, Colorado. Six teenage girls on the FFA horse judging team are determined to make it to nationals come hell or high water. But to do that, they must grapple with jealousy, rivalries, sex, Jesus, AOL chat rooms, impossible expectations, and rumors of a serial killer. Hilary Bettis’s falcon girls is an achingly funny and brutally honest coming of age memoir––and a love letter to the girls she grew up with and the horses who saved their lives.

SEEKING:

JOHN/JASON IN FLASHBACK, 15, Chicano, nerdy and awkward, wears glasses, and flannel. Lives in a house with a lot of drinking.

MR. KUGLER/ALL MALE VOICES OFF-STAGE, 50s, the agriculture teacher and their FFA horse judging coach. A grizzled old soul who smokes like a chimney.

SEEKING:

1927, San Juan Hill, a six-block stretch of Manhattan where tensions run deep between its populations of Black Americans and Caribbean immigrants. Eustace, recently transplanted from the South, falls in love with the girl next door, Annetta. But her ironfisted father, Joseph, an ardent Garveyite, has arranged for her to marry another man from the West Indies to protect his bloodline. In Steve Carter’s blistering saga, Eden, clashing ideologies and youthful passions threaten dangerous consequences for two families and their community.

SEEKING:

EUSTACE BAYLOR, M, early 20s. African-American, steady smile, instigator, playful, charismatic. Strong and impressive build that many people comment on; Southern born and raised but has recently moved to New York City after the tragic death of his mother. Can be coarse and free-wheeling, works at his Aunt’s pool (billiards) room. Not afraid of going after what he wants even if it means challenging the power structure. Speaks with a Southern accent.

LIZZIE HARRIS, F, 40s-50s, African-American, Aunt and caretaker of Eustace, wants to do well by Eustace after her sister died. Worries about him and still considers him a baby, but also lets him take care of her; Originally from the South but has been long established in New York City; neighbors to the Bartons, but holds them in reserve so as not to step on any toes or disturb the waters. Owns a pool room. May still speak with sounds of her southern roots.

AGNES BARTON, F, early 20s, West Indian born but immigrated to America with her parents as a young child. Brainy over-achiever in school and the lessons her father sends her to, wants to be a secretary and get out of the house. In no hurry to marry. Oldest sister and first-born of the family, responsible for the household and of counseling her siblings while her parents work. Willing to do what is needed for her family’s own good. May have a slight West Indian accent.

ANNETTA BARTON, F, 18 years old, West Indian born but also immigrated to America as a small child. Called the “best cook in the world” by her father, but thinks her life at home is mostly drudgery. Formal and well-raised, polite, more relaxed than her older sister, charmed by Eustace, willing to challenge her father. Holds herself high, she is a lady of some quality. May have a slight West Indian accent.

NIMROD BARTON, M, middle child, late teenager, First-generation West Indian-American, always kite-flying, (easily) fired up, oldest son, goads Solomon to do what he says to get him to lighten up; his sisters think he and his brother are treated like kings by their father because they are boys.

SOLOMON BARTON, M, youngest of the children, late teenager, First-generation West Indian American. Dutifully does his studies, won’t fake the answers, would rather obey his father than get in trouble but is often persuaded by Nimrod.

MRS. FLORIE BARTON, F, 40s-50s, West Indian born. Matriarch of the Barton family. Pulled between traditional expectations of her husband and the desire to let her children experience life on their terms in this “new world.” Works hard at three jobs in laundry and housekeeping; disenchanted with her current circumstances but not without hope for a better future for her children. Speaks with West Indian accent.

MR. JOSEPH BARTON, M, 50s-60s, West Indian. Patriarch of the Barton family. Faithful follower of Marcus Garvey. Highly protective of his children; deeply invested in providing for and educating his family. Believes that knowledge is power and is the great equalizer. Wary of his children assimilating to substandard American values. Has arranged for his daughter, Annetta, to marry an older man from their homeland. Speaks with West Indian accent.

NIKOLAI GOGOL’S: THE INSPECTOR

SYNOPSIS: An entire town is plunged into terror as it frantically hides its grift and incompetence from the prying eyes of an undercover inspector. But the cons are about to get conned: the mysterious stranger accepting every bauble, coin, and advance thrown his way is not who he seems to be. Everyone is on the take–or the make–in this outrageously anarchic comedy of errors. Yura Kordonsky’s adaptation of Gogol’s timeless masterpiece, The Inspector, is both the moving drama of a community desperate for a better life and a farce exposing the absurd lengths to which they go in its pursuit.

ANTON SKVOZNIK-DMUKHANOVSKY: (40s-50s, M). The mayor of a small town lost in the middle of a vast empire, too small to be visible on the map. He’s been running his town into the ground for many years, stealing everything he can lay his hands on and letting his friends do the same. Smart, ambitious, and dangerous. Legalized public corporal punishment. Loves his wife and daughter, a family man.

ANNA: (30s-40s, F). Mayor’s wife. Loves her husband but can’t stand the weird shape of his head. Dreams about music, laughter, dancing, but deep inside knows that her life is over and that she will get old and die in this stupid small town, forgotten by everyone. Has a lot of anger inside.

MARYA: (20s, F). Mayor’s daughter. She is madly in love but does not yet know with whom. She reads a lot, loves poetry. Shy and timid, but has raging fire inside. She may come out as clumsy, but this is because she is always overwhelmed and insecure. Very impressionable.

PIOTR DOBCHINSKY: (20s-40s, M). Town citizen, from middle class, friend of Bobchinsky. Has a large family but not a lot of money. Also, has a huge heart. His oldest son is born outside of a wedlock, and he is very worried about his son’s right to last name, estate, and other family privileges. Has a lot to say but fast talkers always interrupt him.

PIOTR BOBCHINSKY: (20s-40s, M). Town citizen, from middle class, friend of Dobchinsky. Has neither family nor money. However, has a huge heart. Scared that after he dies, nobody will ever know he existed. Sometimes gets so overwhelmed by sadness that he can’t speak. Only his friend Dobchinsky can bring him back from these fits of deep unhappiness.

IVAN KHLESTAKOV: (20s, M) An office clerk from St. Petersburg. Poor and deeply in dept, he gets stuck in a small town and gets mistaken for a high government official. He lives it up because he has never before been a center of attention. Ambitious, impulsive, and even wild sometimes. Dreaming of having world power and posh life but scared of his dad and of Osip, his servant. Lonely and dreamy. Has a lot of fear and anger inside.

OSIP: (40s-50s, M). Khlestakov’s servant but a top dog in their relationships. He is hired by Khlestakov’s dad and has power to scold and sometimes even smack “the stupid boy”. He threatens Khlestakov to tell his father everything about his behavior, and experiences strange fun seeing him scared. Still, he loves “the boy” and will protect him like his own son.

LUKA KHLOPOV: (30s-40s, M/F). The School Superintendent. Can barely read. Always fuming about “liberal” schoolteachers. Lives in fear of everything.

AMMOS LIAPKIN-TIAPKIN: (30s-40s, M/F). Town Chief of Police. Loves guns, hunting, and breeding expensive dogs. Read five or six books and considers themself a free thinker. For example, publicly admits taking bribes and dares others to do the same. Has strong opinions on everything but changes them often.

IVAN SHPEKIN: (30s-40s, M/F). The Postmaster. Embezzles mail passing through the postal sorting facility and therefore serves as the most reliable source of world news for the entire town. A dreamer. Loves poetry, steals most poetic letters, and keeps them to themself to re-read later.

ARTEMY ZEMLIANIKA: (30s-40s, M/F). Director of Public Health of the town. A respectable citizen of the town, community leader, and a crook. Loves good food, spends all budget of the hospital they oversee on lavish dinners with friends. Keeps notes on everyone, just in case.

CHRISTIAN HIBNER: (30s-50s, M/F). The Chief Physician at the local hospital. German, doesn’t speak a word in Russian. Maybe they are not even a doctor? Nobody understands them, and they understand nobody. Too bad, they love to be a part of the conversation whenever given a chance. Doesn’t know their age, who were their parents, or how they ended up in this God-forgotten place.

SYNOPSIS: Early one morning, Lolita, a young Boricua trans woman arrives at a suspicious (let’s say evil) Wall Street office with a mission: to take down all seven members of the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Board. Much to her surprise, the receptionist who welcomes her has, more than a story to tell, a show to put on. A revenge saga giving existential drag extravaganza, Mara Vélez Meléndez’s savagely funny play takes aim at the unelected officials who think they know what’s best for the people—and for our own bodies—and the elected ones who appoint them.
